CDS Bipin Rawat death

An Army helicopter carrying 14 people including Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat (CDS Bipin Rawat) and his wife crashed in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu today (December 08, 2021). Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat was killed in the accident.

Indian and Russian helicopters


Thirteen people, including General Bipin Rawat and his wife, were killed in the accident.

The first Russian helicopter was ordered by the Ministry of Defense in 2008.


Delivery began in 2011 and by 2013, a total of 36 helicopters had been delivered to India. In addition, during the aero show in February 2013, India also ordered 12 Mi-17V5 helicopters.


As part of the 2008 deal, the Ministry of Defense and Rosoboronexport signed an agreement for 71 Mi-17V5 helicopters in 2012-13, according to the Economic Times.


The last batch of orders under this agreement was sent to India in July 2018.
